∂AIL Professor K.S. Hsu↓Institute of Computers↓Academia Sinica↓Peking, China∞

Dear Professor Hsu:

Many thanks to you and your colleagues for your hospitality
in Peking and for your letter of September 30. Enclosed is a
copy of a letter I sent to Professor Tuan Hsio-fu.

The artificial intelligence summer school is still not definite.
Professor Takasu is trying to arrange it, and if he can't, Professor
Igarashi of Tsukuba University will also try. However, the Japanese
have difficulty organizing such things on short notice, especially
since Japanese universities still haven't developed the practice of using student
dormitories for housing conference attendees during vacations. They said
they would let me know early in October whether they have been successful,
but I haven't heard yet.

The newspapers have just published the fact that six
Chinese scholars will come to Stanford in October, and Dr. Douglas
Murray tells me that two will be from your Institute including
one who is scheduled to work with Professor Knuth. If this
is all correct, you will soon have first hand information about many
aspects of computer science at Stanford.

It occurs to me that if we had had a session in your Institute
in which people explained their research interests, I might have been
able to suggest additional people whose visit to Stanford would be
mutually beneficial.

I hope I will have the opportunity to return your
hospitality.
